50 Themes Strong: The Story Behind Four Years of DuraPaw
Table of Contents
50 original themes. More than four years of designing, sampling and building DuraPaw. In August 2022, Bailey and I shipped our first themed DuraPaw dog box. In September 2026, Paws & Pencils: Back to Drool became theme number 50. Looking back, the boxes have changed a lot, but the reason we make them hasn't: we want dogs and their people to be genuinely excited when DuraPaw shows up at the door.
Where It Started
When Bailey and I started DuraPaw in Edmonton, we weren't interested in filling a box with a few random pet products and calling it a subscription. We wanted to create the kind of dog box we would actually look forward to opening with Millie.
That meant better toys, stronger materials, more personality and a completely different experience every month. The first DuraPaw themed box shipped in August 2022. At the time, reaching 50 different themes wasn't something we were thinking about. We were focused on making the next box better than the one before it.
That mindset never really changed.
50 Themed Worlds Later
Over the next four years, DuraPaw went to some pretty strange places.
We sent dogs into space with Zoomies to the Moonies, explored technology with PUP AI, opened a dog-sized bakery with Bone Appétit: Fresh Out the Barkery, headed outdoors for Camp DuraPaw: Howls & Campfires, and eventually sent pups back to school with our 50th theme, Paws & Pencils: Back to Drool.
And those are only a handful of them.
Each theme starts as an idea and slowly becomes its own little world. We work through the toy concepts, names, materials, colors, artwork, treats, packaging and all the tiny details that make the finished box feel connected.
Some ideas click almost immediately. Others go through round after round of changes before they feel like DuraPaw. We've had toys change shape, size, weight, material and color because the sample in our hands didn't live up to what we imagined on the screen.

Toys Built to Last
The themes get a lot of attention, but they only work if the toys inside are worth playing with.
That has become a much bigger part of DuraPaw as we've grown. Over 50 themes, we've worked with plush, rope, rubber, nylon, TPR, enrichment designs and toys that combine multiple materials and play styles.
We've learned that durability isn't as simple as making every toy harder. A good toy has to fit the dog using it. A smaller pup, a balanced chewer and a serious power chewer can need completely different products even when they're receiving the same monthly theme.
That is why today's DuraPaw boxes are much more personalized than our earliest ones. We think about size, chewing style, materials and how each toy is actually meant to be used before deciding where it belongs.
Our 2-in-1 Rippables are a good example of how that thinking evolved. Instead of treating ripping as something we always had to prevent, we started designing an outer toy that could be ripped apart to reveal a second playable toy inside. It turned a behavior dogs already love into part of the experience.
We are still improving them. We are still testing new materials. And we're still changing products when we think we can make them better.
Learning From the Pack
Some of the most useful product development hasn't happened in a meeting. It has come directly from customers.
When thousands of dogs with completely different play styles interact with your toys, you learn quickly. Customers tell us what became their dog's favorite, what lasted, what they want more of and what wasn't the right fit.
We pay attention to that.
That feedback has influenced the materials we use, the way we personalize boxes, the balance of toys inside a theme and our focus on longer-lasting play. It's also why we stand behind our toys with free replacements. If something isn't right for a particular dog, we want the opportunity to find a better fit and learn from it.
One of the biggest lessons from the first 50 themes is that there is no single perfect dog toy. The better we understand the dog opening the box, the better DuraPaw can become.
Canadian-Owned
DuraPaw is still a Canadian-owned, founder-built company.
Bailey and I remain closely involved in the themes, toys, product names, packaging and customer experience. There have been plenty of nights with samples covering the table, comparing tiny differences in materials or debating whether a toy needs to be 10 millimeters bigger.
That probably sounds excessive until you see the finished product arrive months later.
One of our favorite parts of building DuraPaw is watching something go from a ridiculous idea in a conversation to a sketch, then a sample, then a finished toy, and eventually into the hands of customers across Canada and the United States.
Millie has been around for that whole process too. She was there when DuraPaw was just getting started, and samples still have a habit of becoming hers long before we've finished reviewing them.

Why 50 Matters
Fifty themes gave us something we didn't have when we started: perspective.
We can look back at our earliest boxes and see exactly how DuraPaw evolved. The toy designs became more ambitious. The materials became more intentional. Personalization became more important. And our expectations for what deserves to become a monthly theme got much higher.
Today, we ask a tougher question before committing to a concept:
Would someone want this box even if they weren't already a DuraPaw subscriber?
A camping theme should make you want to go camping with your dog. Halloween should instantly feel like Halloween. Christmas should feel like something worth putting under the tree.
If the idea isn't strong enough to create that reaction, we keep working on it.
You can see how the brand has evolved for yourself in our complete DuraPaw theme archive, with all 50 monthly worlds in one place.
The Next 50
Our Paws & Pencils: Back to Drool themed box may be number 50, but we're already working well beyond it.
The goal isn't to find one successful formula and repeat it forever. That would defeat the entire reason we started making monthly themes in the first place.
We want the next 50 to have stronger concepts, better personalization, more durable toys and even more moments where someone sees a new DuraPaw collection and immediately thinks, my dog needs that.
Most of all, we want to keep earning the excitement of the customers who let us show up at their door every month.
To everyone who helped us reach theme number 50, thank you.
You gave us feedback, sent us photos, told us which toys became favorites and trusted us to keep building something special for your dogs.
We're having more fun creating DuraPaw than ever. Here's to the next 50. 🐾
